I’m actually kinda pissed that I didn’t open those emails from GFC New York months and months ago….cuz I shoulda BEEN up on Big K.R.I.T. But as I always say, better late than never…and I GOTTA share this with those who have never heard of Big K.R.I.T. I actually met dude at SXSW and even saw him perform at Leaders of the New Cool a couple months ago here in Atlanta and still only heard the songs he performed on both those occasions, smh.

Anyway, K.R.I.T.’s recently released album (via DJBooth.net) is THEE best shit out right now. Sorry Jeezy, your shit doesn’t come close to this. And if you know Jeezy, share this with him. K.R.I.T. is Southern as fuck (Meridian, MS to be exact) and for me, and many others, he fills that void for Pimp C. Lyrically dude is outta here and he made all the beats on this project and they’re all amazing. Great sample usage….perfect strip club music, smokin’ music and ridin’ music.

But yeah, I encourage you to check out the project for yourself. It really offers a bright future for Southern Hip Hop or as Pimp would say “Country Rap Tunes.” Dude doesn’t waste alot of space with the rapping, dude really touches on some real life topics. The shit is dope, but I’m really looking forward to the music K.R.I.T. starts making when he really finds himself as an artist.

“Country Shit” – very Pimp C, UGK, DJ Paul-influenced production and delivery…not to say K.R.I.T. isn’t authentic, but it’s obvious what legends influenced his career in hip-hop. Doesn’t take much to sell this track and he’s spittin’ too. This is definitely a strip club track. And if you know me, you know how much I love strip clubs….for the music, of course lol

“See Me On Top” – again, crazy production….great sample usage. Every rapper needs a ‘see me on top of the game’ song and I can feel the passion in every word from K.R.I.T. which at the end of the day…passion + lyrics + authenticity makes some of the greatest rappers of our time. Plus I love his country ass accent. He not as country as Grip tho haha.

“Something” – honestly, I picked this song for the beat at first, cuz I’m country and the use of the sample is amazing, strategic.  But then I HAD to go back and listen to the lyrics, and honestly, this song gave me chills. For everyone and anyone that has gone through any struggle to get what they want, I think this will give you the same feelings I got. This song is pretty perfect for what myself and Grip are going through — anyway, listen to it and download ‘K.R.I.T. wuz Here’ NOW.

Not sure if you’re familiar with DJ Toomp or not, but he’s partially responsible for T.I.’s success in the rap game. Well, now he’s working with New Orleans native, RE (or REload as I call him)…and here’s his second tape under Toomp’s label/management. If you don’t have RE’s first tape, you can get it HERE.

Anyway, as for ‘REgeneration,’ it’s quite possibly one of thee best tapes released on the independent scene in Atlanta this year. The production is top notch, lyricism is outta here and the song concepts are very impressive as well. To make this easier for my lazy readers, I posted my 4 favorite tracks from the tape. After listening to them, I’m sure you’ll want to download the entire project…or you’re just an idiot.

Overall, I give this project an 8.5 out of 10. I listened to the whole tape all the way through and I think the only reason I can’t give it a 10 is cuz I know for a fact that his next project will be on some epic shit.

Oh, I don’t review ALL mixtapes, so DON’T ask me to. I review the shit I like because I wanna share good music with y’all. I’m not in the business of making wack niggas rich.

“Hip Hop Legend” (produced by Alex Goose)…every rapper should have a tribute song to hip-hop and this one is very smooth, great word play and sincere. “I had perfect attendance when I graduated from the old school, some of y’all never went” ….from that line alone, I think RE sets himself apart from a lot of young, up and coming rappers who aren’t even familiar with the legends before Lil Wayne, TI and Jay-Z.

“Keep Reaching” (produced by Ced L. Young) …the production on this track is one of my favorite from the tape. Sampling Sade was a good move on the producer’s part. Very motivating lyrics and great message. I’m all about songs with meaning and lucky for me, ALL of RE’s songs have meaning…no just cool hooks.

“Street Runner” (produced by SMKA)…this song already appeared on SMKA’s ‘The 808 Experiment Vol. 2′, but it’s most definitely worthy of being on my top 4 picks from ‘REgeneration.‘ Besides the production being outta here (the horns are insane), once again RE kills is lyrically. “No, I got too much pride and I don’t like to borrow, realest shit I ever wrote…they cuttin’ off my lights tomorrow.”

“2nite” (produced by Andre Ellis)…gotta have a song for the bitches, and preferably one that isn’t on some sucka shit. A very different, mainstream-esque beat for RE, but a great pick, cuz he laced the beat well. And I actually don’t mind the autotune.
